Today I returned from an overnight trip with my Host Family to a place called Lake Toya which is here...

It's super pretty. Definitely added to my list of favourite places in Hokkaido. We stayed in a hotel right on the water's edge, with uninterrupted views of the lake as well as the mountain in the distance (Mt Youtei, aka "Hokkaido's Fuji").

There were 12 of us all up that went; my host mum, host dad, host sister, host brother and his girlfriend, the grandpa and grandma, me, and kimberly and her three boys (they're staying in this house for 3 months too, because Kimberly stayed here 20 years ago).

Anyway, it was pretty good. We arrived in the afternoon and went to the pool! Second time swimming since I left Australia. It's hard to believe I've only been swimming twice in 10 months. I can't wait to get back in the ocean.

Anyway, we hung out there for about an hour and a half (there were waterslides and a wave pool, yay), and after an all-you-can-eat buffet for dinner, we went back to our hotel and chilled out, mostly in my/my host sibling's room. We all sat around drinking red wine and listening to stories from my host parents which were hilarious.

Everyone had gone to the onsen earlier, but I was adamant and said NO NO NO ONSEN NO but of course I went in the end lol. It was my best onsen experience yet; I had the whole place to myself. It must be the quiet season. But it was awesome; I stayed in there from 10:00-10:30pm because I didn't have to freak out about other people being there. So, I love onsen, but only when I have it to myself haha. Like a giant bath pool. Yum.

Anyway... we woke up early this morning and ate breakfast and then just chilled out again until it was time to check out and go home. Snow had fallen overnight so we had a mini snowball fight, but it hadn't fallen back here in Megumino/Eniwa :( soon, maybe.

036

Well well well well well well. Today I've been in Japan for 10 months. Double figures! Which now means I have 7 weeks until I leave Hokkaido. I've heard that it's already super hot back in Australia so I'm contemplating wearing my swimmers on the plane and jumping in the ocean as soon as I get off :P it could happen.

So this week I only had school on Monday - yesterday was a Public Holiday and the rest of this week I have off due to school exams. Hurruh. But I forgot how easy it is to get bored. I have stuff I could do, but.. もう無理だ。hehheh.

Quick update since last blog.

I went to a small meeting in Sapporo for the new bunch of Japanese exchange students who are due to go on exchange in mid-2011. So far there's only 3 of them, which is a lot less than the several that went this year, but maybe they'll have more later.

These three are (from left to right) Yodai, who is the little brother of my friend Miyu who went to USA last year on exchange, Hiroshi, who is the little brother of Tsubasa who went to Australia in 2008 (his family were my previous host family), and then there's Chiharu, my current host sister. They're going to America, Canada, and Australia respectively.

I also found out the date for our farewell meeting/party - it's in three weeks!! THREE!!! that's still like a whole month before we're actually due to go! Hah. So Dylan, Sam and I have freaked out a little and are frantically working on speeches and presentations to show at the meeting. I'll be uploading mine to YouTube a bit later, so if anyone's interesting in watching it, it'll be up in a few weeks.

So yesterday I went to Kaela's house (the Canadian girl), along with Sam, to watch a Disney movie and hang out. Then we went with her host mum and her host sister to the chocolate factory in Sapporo - they're these biscuits with chocolate sandwiched between them, and they're famous to Hokkaido - 白い恋人 - and they're super yummeh. The factory was more like a museum, and had loads of fairy lights too.

Anyway that's it really, today I have my Rotary meeting in the evening and my teacher should be here in an hour or so. Tomorrow I have nothing planned apart from shipping a whole lot of stuff back to Australia. That'll be interesting.
Then on Friday, I'm going on a trip with my host family to the onsen/pool, so I'll update again after that. Weeooo.

Just out of curiosity - if you read this, could you please just leave a comment? It doesn't have to say anything in particular, I'm just curious as to how many people read this blog. Thankyou :)

Firstly... apologies for the very frequent barrage of blogs being published lately. But I just wanted to share this; I got my return itinerary! Yay! Although it turns out it's going to take a massive 48 hours just to get from Japan to Australia.

January 13th - Depart at 11:30pm Chitose > Tokyo Haneda and stay the night in a hotel (with all the other exchange students that I originally came over with... that should be cool)

January 14th - Depart at 10:30am from Tokyo Narita > Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) and arrive at 4:45pm. Then at 10:40pm, Kuala Lumpur > Sydney Airport.

January 15th - Arrive in Sydney Airport at 9:30am. Then, after going to the Domestic Terminal, depart at 12:00pm from Sydney Airport > Merimbula Airport, arriving at 1:15pm.

LONG LONG LONG LONG!!!!!! I'm a little annoyed that it's going to take 2 nights just to get back to the country, especially when there are reasonably cheap, DIRECT flights between Tokyo and Sydney. I find it a bit unnecessary to stay overnight in Tokyo, let alone go all the way to Malaysia. Geez!!

Anyway, it's good to have a final return plan now. It means I can start to organise things a bit more, and most importantly, start organising what to post home and what to pack. I'm excited :)

On Friday night after school, Dakota, Kaela and I went to Susukino in Sapporo to go out for dinner. I've only been there once before, but not really looked around. So it was nice to walk around.

We went to a "Japanese Pub Restaurant" where we ended up being the only foreigners there, so we made some friends, and soon enough we had to leave to get home by curfew -__- ah well.

So that's really the only thing that's happened lately but I just felt like writing for the sake of it. Today is overcast, quiet and still, and I'm heading into Sapporo later to meet up with Sam and Kaela and maybe see a movie, go shopping, just do whatever lol.

Today is November the 14th. This time, in TWO MONTHS exactly, I'll be on the plane and leaving Japan. Like I've said in basically all of my other posts on here, time has gone very fast. I'm so excited to get back to Australia. It almost seems to good to be true that I can actually go back to that wonderful place.

Week after next I get nearly the whole week off school which will be good, due to the students having exams. After that it's basically December, and it's only about 3-4 weeks of school until I can run out of there screaming and never go back. I have to go to school on Christmas Eve :( but after Christmas, I'll have only 2 weeks left. I've been trying to think of things I want to do that I haven't done yet, but my mind draws a blank. So... if anyone reads these still, want to leave suggestions? Please?

Other things I have coming up... not much I suppose.. I'm going to the Rotary Orientation meeting for the new batch of Japanese exchange students due to go to Australia/Canada/America/Finland mid-2011. I have a trip with my host family to a hot spring resort, which will be interesting seeing as though I don't like onsen :P

Other than that, it's basically just Christmas, New Years, Farewell meetings and parties, and then home-time. I read back on all my blogs this morning. I wrote way in the beginning that with only three weeks to go it hadn't sunk in that I was going to Japan. To be honest, it has never hit me that I'm here! Sure I speak the language and things are different, but it's never just come around and smacked me in the face that I'm here. Hmm.

033

Well, the school trip has been and gone. Even though it was only a 4 day/3 night trip, it was very busy and I was SO tired by the end, not to mention about ready to slap a few of my classmates haha.

So, bright and early on Friday the 5th of November, 164 students (half of my grade, the other half left separately) met at Chitose airport and we flew, via Tokyo, to Osaka airport.

From Osaka Airport we all got on buses and drove the hour to Nara, where we spent a little over an hour looking in Todaiji Temple and around the grounds, and feeding the deer, although some of the girls preferred to keep the deer-biscuits to eat themselves (yuck). I'm glad that I visited Nara earlier with my family, because it was quite rushed and we only had 10 minutes to get any souvenirs we wanted. After that we travelled back to Osaka and got into our hotels and yeah.

The next morning we woke up super early (breakfast was at 6:30am) and bussed over to Kyoto, where our first stop was the Kiyomizu-dera. I got a group of European travellers come up and ask me all about exchange and where I'm from and how's Japanese school, so that was fun.

After that we went to another temple, where we all had to enter with our palms pressed together, step through the door left foot first, and then sit yoga-style on cushions (or attempt to, anyway). There was a strict monk/priest guy who, after telling us all to be silent and still, rang bells and bowed to the shrine and then got a long stick with writing on it, and patrolled around to make sure we were all sitting properly. If someone was doing it wrong he'd whack them on the shoulders with the stick. He was scary lol. So that went for a solid hour... no moving, no talking, although it was nice to just and listen to the birds and stuff outside, instead of the usual cars and yelling and city noise.

After that my group and I walked around Gion a bit, then had lunch at Kyoto Station and went back to Osaka where we found our way to a place called Dotonbori which was just stuffed full of lights and people and noise, it was fairly awesome. We went to a restaurant down some stairs and had Okonomiyaki for dinner before heading back to the hotel again.

The next morning, another early wake-up, we went to Shin-Osaka Station to catch the bullet train to Tokyo. It took about 2 hours, and.. yeah. We ate obento and slept and stuff, everyone was pretty tired.

Once in Tokyo, we split off into smaller groups and were allowed to explore the city ourselves. We went to the Tokyo Tower first, which I led the way to seeing as though the hotel I'd stayed at with my family was right nearby, so I remembered the way. We didn't end up climbing it which I was disappointed about... the other girls didn't want to pay the 800yen (though they were happy to go and buy loads of food and souvenirs. Hmm.)

So after that, we headed back to the station and caught the subway to Asakusa, where the Kaminari-mon (Thunder Gate) is, but they weren't interested in that, they just wanted to find this place where we could cook our own traditional snacks, famous in that area apparently. I showed the way once again, and we made our snacks.

By then it was getting to be late afternoon, and after making a brief stop in Tokyo to put some of the souvenirs in lockers we caught the train to Shibuya, where the giant crossing is. I love that place, and I saw a few REALLY NICE cars, lamborghinis or something like that. Yummmm.

Anyway, after spending just 20-ish minutes there, we realised we had to head back to the hotel to get home before curfew. Of course no-one listened to me about which way back would be faster, so we were 15 minutes late and got in trouble. I was pretty peeved about that.

Anyway, the next morning we headed over to Disneyland. I'd been there only a month ago, but in that month they'd changed the decoration theme completely from Halloween to Christmas. It looked pretty spectacular.

I stayed with my group at first, but after ONE HOUR of wandering back and forth, back and forth, with them umm-ing and ahh-ing about what to line up for, (not to mention them ignoring my explanation of the Fast Pass system), I gave up on them and left to spend the rest of the day by myself. I didn't ride anything because there were too many people and I'd ridden everything I wanted to with my family, so I spent the 4 hours we had browsing the shops and watching the parades and basically just chilling out, which I was quite happy with. I also bought an AWESOME teapot.

Best buy of the year haha. So after that, we drove to the airport and flew back to Hokkaido, arriving in the evening.

The things I disliked most about this trip was the lack of common sense of the students and teachers alike. We weren't allowed to go to sleep before 10:15pm, even though we had free time after dinner. I was tired and admittedly got annoyed at my classmates for telling me matter-of-factly that I was to get back into my uniform at 10:00pm so I could go with them to the other room for a group meeting. We weren't allowed to leave our room if we weren't in full uniform.

On the last night, in Tokyo, we had to take all our baggage downstairs to get freighted back to Hokkaido. So that meant that we had to put anything we needed for the morning in our backpacks, so I had to walk around Disneyland and return to Hokkaido with a heavy backpack of pyjamas, toiletries and whatever else. It was stupid.

I also got frustrated by the indecisiveness of my classmates. We could've saved a lot of time in a lot of situations, for example at Disneyland, and in Tokyo when we were late for curfew.

The things I liked, though, was the hotel quality - all the hotels were 3-4 star and comfortable. Although I didn't enjoy having to continuously wear my uniform, I liked the mixed expressions I received from other foreign people and Japanese alike. I was approached by a few foreigners and asked about my exchange, and it was nice to speak to them.

Anyway, that's about it really. It was a pretty good trip, if not very busy, and I do admit it's a lot better than Australian school excursions in the way of going to places.

Now I only have a month or so left of school, about 18 days of school in total, and I'm looking forward to getting out of that uniform for good!!

032

Wuaaa I'm all old and stuff now. I had my 19th birthday on the 20th, which was quiet but nice enough. I got phone calls from Australia, Skyped and got loads of Happy Birthday's on facebook, so that was good. I had a Rotary meeting and Japanese lesson that day too, and not many people at Rotary realised it was my birthday but they made up for it the following week by bringing me a really nice cake lol.Because my birthday was on a Wednesday, I waited 'til Saturday to invite all my Exchange friends over. There were the exchangers, plus some Japanese friends, and my Chinese friend Ku-san. We went to Karaoke and then had yaki-niku at my host mum's restaurant. It was good :)

The stocking game also proved to be popular.. lol. (First one to be able to pull their heads out without using hands wins).

The next day, most of us met up in Sapporo at Dylan's suggestion. We went to a Leisure Centre, similar to Rejaspo - it had things like indoor roller-blading, ball-pits, mechanical bull, massage chairs, sports games and arcade games plus more. That was really fun too, and cheap, it was 1500yen for 3 hours of unlimited stuff.

Last week, the first snow fell. I was on the train to school with Sam, and I commented how it was meant to start snowing today - but it was clear blue skies. Yet just 5 minutes later, dark clouds rolled over and the snow started! It was VERY cold and I didn't have an umbrella with me so I got drenched because it was more sleety than snow. Not very fun. In the morning everything was white, but it melted and hasn't snowed since, so.. maybe soon. All the trees are still orange and red and yellow though - autumn is so pretty in Japan.

This Wednesday (Culture Day, public holiday) I had my friend Mayu come over. I just met her last week, because she's the daughter of my host mum's friend. She's super nice and her, Chiharu and I hang out a lot now. We ended up having a sleepover and we went to Karaoke across the road for like 2-3 hours. I'm going to miss Karaoke haha. The next morning it was raining heavily and we were bored, so I unveiled my Aussie cookie-cutters and we made Aussie animal bikkies. Yummo.

So yeah. It's November now, isn't that weird? It's only 2 months 'til I come home now. In all honesty I can't wait to get home. I feel like I've had my fill of Japan, and I can't wait to get back home and jump in the ocean and eat a pie for lunch and drive my car to my friend's houses. I'm going to try my best to make the most of these last couple of months, though.

Tomorrow morning I fly out of Hokkaido bright and early for my School Excursion. The 300 students in my grade are heading to Kyoto, Osaka and Tokyo over 4 days/3 nights. It'll be busy! But although I've already been to Kyoto and Tokyo (and Disneyland), it'll be good to re-visit and maybe see some new things. I could do without the 6am wake-up's and the uniform rule, though :P
